The Upper Dolpo Trek ย is an extraordinary journey into one of the most remote and untouched regions of Nepal. Hidden behind the high Himalayan mountains, Upper Dolpo offers a rare combination of dramatic landscapes, ancient villages, peaceful valleys, and centuries-old Buddhist and Bon traditions.
The trek takes you through Shey Phoksundo National Park, past the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, across high mountain passes, and into traditional villages such as Shey, Namgung, Saldang, and Dho Tarap. The landscape changes from green forests and river valleys to dry, high-altitude deserts that look very different from the rest of Nepal.
One of the biggest highlights is Phoksundo Lake, known for its striking turquoise water. You will also visit Shey Gompa, an important spiritual site surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery. Crossing high passes such as Kang La adds an exciting challenge to the journey.
Upper Dolpo is remote, and the trek requires good physical fitness, patience, and a willingness to travel with basic facilities. In return, you get to experience a side of Nepal where traditional lifestyles and ancient mountain culture are still deeply connected to everyday life.
